Lumina Brentwood ads appearing

The Lumina Brentwood project at the south foot of Beta Ave is beginning to rev up its promotions. As the site is now seeing the demolition of existing buildings for excavation.   The site will also have its sales centre located there.

The development will be situated across Beta Ave from the upcoming Concord Brentwood project and will eventually see a pedestrian overpass connecting Beta Ave over the railway tracks to Still Creek Ave and Costco to the south.

Lumina Brentwood in Burnaby will seamlessly merge urban living with the great outdoors

Brentwood is one of Burnaby’s most desirable neighbourhoods, and developer THIND Properties Ltd. has plans to make it even more exciting. This spring it will be introducing Lumina Brentwood, a four-tower residential community that will provide a close connection to both nature and the city.
With prices starting in the $380,000s, Lumina Brentwood will offer the best value in the Brentwood area by far. A wide selection of one-, two- and three-bedroom homes will be available, and with nine-foot ceilings and expansive windows, all will feel incredibly spacious. Other modern touches will include air conditioning and a full-size stainless steel Bosch appliance set. In short, all the ingredients for comfortable contemporary living will be on hand.
Of course, part of Lumina Brentwood’s appeal will be its convenient location in the Brentwood neighbourhood. Located on Beta Street just south of Lougheed Highway, the residential community will be within walking distance of a huge number of urban amenities, from shopping at Brentwood Mall and Whole Foods to dining at restaurants like Cactus Club. And, as mentioned, plenty of outdoor activities will be easily accessible — you’ll be able to cycle along the Central Valley bike path, ski at Grouse and Seymour mountains or canoe at Buntzen Lake.
If you ever do need to venture further afield, that won’t be a problem. Lumina Brentwood will be incredibly close to the SkyTrain, meaning that Vancouver, Surrey and Coquitlam won’t be far.
THIND Properties Ltd. will be opening a presentation centre for Lumina Brentwood this spring, and it will come complete with three fully furnished showhomes. To be among the first to receive updates and new information, be sure to click here to register.

Destination Toyota looking to make way for development

Destination Toyota on the corner of Lougheed Hwy and Madison Ave has placed its property on sale.   It was just a matter of time before it followed suit like Morrey Nissan which had earlier moved to Still Creek to make room for Solo District at the corner of Willingdon Ave and Lougheed Hwy.  Speaking of Morrey, the site at Sill Creek will see a comeback by Morrey Infinity which had closed down on the north side of Lougheed Hwy to make room for the developments that went in there a few years ago.

According to the last City of Burnaby Council meeting, Destination Toyota will move into the Still Creek Auto Mall.

More roadwork at Douglas and Still Creek

Burnaby Council has approved more road improvements for Douglas Rd and Still Creek Ave (Engineering Agreement E-14 2009).  This is a continuation of previous work that saw the widening of Douglas Road between Goring and Still Creek Avenues.  The next phase will see the widening of Still Creek Avenue between Douglas Ave and Westminster Ave.

Once work begins, expect delays to be exacerbated by the scheduled trains that cross at Douglas Rd as was the case with the first phase.

Crows and cyclists

The Still Creek crows are getting some attention in a Province news article (below).

As the crow flies, the cyclists ride

BY THE PROVINCE, THE PROVINCE JANUARY 31, 2013

A nature and arts loving group of cyclists plan to celebrate the daily migration of thousands of crows into Burnaby.
On Saturday afternoon, a bike ride is planned to follow the migrating crows as they make their daily way to an area in the Willingdon Avenue and Still Creek Drive area of Burnaby.
The Crow Roost Twilight Bike Ride is organized by the Still Moon Arts Society.
Cyclists are being asked to meet at the Lakewood Drive Central Valley Greenway location at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Carmen Rosen, the artistic director of Still Moon Arts, said they will ride over to the Renfrew SkyTrain station to pick up other cyclists at 4:15 p.m. and then ride down to the area at Willingdon and Still Creek where the birds stay overnight.
In the past, the society has sponsored night walks through Renfrew Ravine to raise awareness of the stream rehabilitation and return of the chum salmon that is taking place in Still Creek.
Rosen said early February is prime time to see the huge flocks of crows. The numbers decrease by the end of the month once the birds nest.
“It is an amazing phenomenon,” said Rosen of the crows flying down to the area around Willingdon and Still Creek each day.
“The ride takes place just prior to their nesting season so there will be big numbers.
“This is an event for cyclist and bird enthusiasts,” she added. “This is also to raise awareness of the environment. We want to get people thinking of the environment in a creative way and how to take care of it.”
Estimates have the number of crows that fly into the Still Creek area on any given day as more than 20,000.
The activity is part of Reflecting Still Creek, a program from the Still Moon Arts Society that aims to connect people with the creek.
Wayne Goodey, a UBC zoology department lecturer whose background is bird behaviour said the crows congregate in huge numbers for a variety of reasons. Some may be looking for a mate while others are there to find food.
“They could be communicating with each other about feeding areas,” he said. ”Crows live in family groups.
“They do follow each other. It may be just a case of follow the leader.”

Carter dealerships to stay put?

In yesterday's Burnaby Now article, Burnaby: Can the city stay on course?, Burnaby City Councillor Nick Volkow's statement that he doesn't think that the Carter dealerships are going anywhere, puts to rest my guess that they may make the move from their current location on Lougheed Hwy to the new site being developed at Still Creek.

In my opinion, if you look at the setup at the Carter dealerships, you see 1970's written all over them as they represent pure urban sprawl of the past on their largely paved lots filled with vehicles with a small building and shop tucked away in one corner. From a visual perspective, if you compare the Carter dealerships to Destination Toyota, the Toyota dealership at Madison and Lougheed wins hands down. Whereas the compact Toyota dealership blends in nicely with the surrounding new development, the Carter dealerships look plain, ugly and out of place.  If you want to compare the quality of the cars...well... this is not an automobile review site, but the last time I noticed, Toyota has not had to seek bankruptcy protection due to the poor workmanship that is associated with Chrysler and GM cars.

The compact, two-level Toyota showroom and lot at Lougheed and
Madison fits in better with the surrounding area than the large,
unattractive Carter dealerships reminiscent of the past.

Simply put, in their current form, the Carter dealerships are not an attraction but an eyesore as the Brentwood area changes around it.  If the dealerships are not going anywhere, I hope they take a page out of Destination Toyota's book and remodel their dealerships. They might even consider downsizing their lots to make room for development that fits the growth strategy for Brentwood. In doing so, they would contribute to change instead of impeding it.

More car dealerships moving to Still Creek

The rezoning process is underway to allow for the addition of at least 2 more car dealerships on Still Creek Ave west of Willingdon Ave.  According to the City of Burnaby, the project at 4451 Still Creek Ave will be designed by CEI Architecture and is the second phase of a possible 3 dealerships

Perhaps the 2 dealerships on Lougheed Hwy between Willingdon and Beta Aves (Carter Dodge Chrysler and Carter GM) will make the move to Still Creek.  A move by the Carter dealerships would free up some of the largest area of real estate in the Brentwood core for development.

Th site of the future car dealerships sits across the street from
both Morrey Nissan and McDonald's headquarters.

Morrey Nissan (below) was the first major car dealership to
make the move from Lougheed Hwy to Still Creek Ave.

The Carter dealerships occupy most of the area from Lougheed
Hwy to Dawson Ave between Alpha and Willingdon Aves.

The only other 2 major dealerships that may make the move from Lougheed Hwy would be Coastal Ford at Holdom and Lougheed, and Destination Toyota at Madison and Lougheed.  Car dealerships along Lougheed Hwy seem to be out of place as the Lougheed Hwy street front changes and gives way to mixed-use developments.

The first dealership to make the move to Still Creek from Lougheed was Morrey Nissan which now occupies the corner of Still Creek and Willingdon Ave across the street from McDonald's regional headquarters.
