Brentwood-area projects go to public hearing Oct. 29

Two major projects in the Brentwood area will go to public hearings on Oct. 29.
A 52-storey highrise apartment tower and two four-to-six-storey apartment buildings  are being proposed for 1735 and 1763 Douglas Road and 1710 Gilmore Ave. by LM Aviara Communities Ltd.
The project would include a total of 595 apartments, said a city staff report, which noted the site is large enough to accommodate up to three residential towers of about 25 storeys each.
Over at the Brentwood mall site, owner Shape Properties has applied for a rezoning to allow for improvements to the existing building's exterior, a minor expansion of the retail space and a new temporary building at the northwest corner of the site to accommodate financial institutions during the major redevelopment of the property.
The public hearing will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29 in Burnaby city hall council chambers.

  1. We are the Graveley Traffic Calming Group of residents. We are currently readying ourselves for presentations to city hall regarding the lack of planning for traffic volumes, speeds and illegal parking on Graveley Street. Our street has over 1400 vehicles per day trying to drive at 50km/hr to shortcut to and from Carleton to Willingdon. Stop signs are ignored. Drivers hit our vehicles as they rush through the street. This is a residential street that has already been sustaining increased traffic and safety issues. The new developments will bring 3000-4000 more people into the area and no plan to date has taken into account our neighbourhood. We appear on the city map at the periphery, uncoloured. That means our street is not in the plan, but is simply a reference point for the perimeter of development. We are actively lobbying for planning that will protect our street and keep it residential, not arterial. The current signal at Willingdon/Graveley/Brentlawn is accompanied by a stop sign at Graveley. This sign is routinely ignored, even as people try to cross. Imagine 1400 cars coming through as they hurry to and from work.

  2. To the Gravely Traffic Calming Group: Please forward your contact information to me and I will connect you with the residents trying to organize along Brentlawn Drive. Next month, the City of Burnaby Traffic Committee is meeting with the Brentlawn group in early November.

  3. This proposed 52 story Aviara II appears to be situated in front of the 34 story Aviara I highrise that's currently going up. There is plenty of room on that site for the new tower that won't impact the views in Aviara I, but the proposal specifies that the tower will be situated on 'the southwest corner' of the site which is right in front of the first one! I hope they have a more detailed drawing at the hearing as the one in the proposal doesn't show the placement of the buildings.
